The Tampa Bay Lightning kicked off their season with a great start going 8-1 in their first ten games, and they were scoring a lot of goals throughout those games. The offense in Tampa Bay is full of star studded players, and there should be no lack of offense in their game. Unfortunately, defense matters too, and that’s where Tampa Bay found themselves coming up short.

<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-9001" title="NHL: Philadelphia Flyers at Tampa Bay LightningMarch 18, 2013; Tampa FL, USA; Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Martin St. Louis (26) skates against the Philadelphia Flyers during the second period at Tampa Times Forum. He was followed by fellow star Steven Stamkos who scored 29 goals and 57 points. Stamkos came up 3 goals short of the Maurice Rocket Richard trophy, but he and St. Louis were the number one and number two point leaders in the whole NHL.

General manager Steve Yzerman, made a move at the trade deadline and acquired goaltender Ben Bishop from the Ottawa Senators in a trade for young forward Cory Conacher. Bishop started 9 games in Tampa before the end of the season and posted a save percentage of .917%.

Guy Boucher, the coach of the Lightning for three seasons, was fired following a game in March earlier this season. The Lightning handed the reins over to AHL affiliate Syracuse Crunch coach Jon Cooper. Cooper was a successful coach in the AHL and looks to do more of the same at the NHL level.

Tampa has three mentionable free agents this season, including goaltender Mathieu Garon. With the addition of Ben Bishop, it looks certain that Garon is on his way out the door. Fowards J.T. Brown and Benoit Pouliot will be free agents as well this year.

The question is, what now? Jon Cooper and Steve Yzerman have their work cut out for them this off-season. Tampa has a good team on paper, but their inability to keep the puck out of their own net cost them in the end.

The Ottawa Senators have traded Ben Bishop to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Cory Conacher and a 4th round 2013 draft pick. There were said to be 6 teams in the running for Bishop one of them was the Philadelphia Flyers. According to Pierre LeBrun the Flyers found the price for Bishop too high.

Bruce Garrioch obtained a quote from Conancher:

“It’s always a little shocking,” says Conacher. “A new start in Ottawa. I’m excited to go to Ottawa.”

— Bruce Garrioch (@SunGarrioch) April 3, 2013

This move is a little confusing on the side of the Ottawa Senators. They are definitely not in short supply of young offensively gifted players. The Lightning however were in need of a goaltending upgrade and with Bishop being so young and improving more and more every game this seems like a good fit. I think both teams benefited from this trade but the real repercussions will come on Tuesday when the two teams play each other.

With this being the biggest trade to happen today a lot of little interesting facts have surfaced. This one from Ian Mendes is by far my favourite so far:

As I said on TV, Conacher for Bishop is biggest size discrepancy in a trade in NHL history…(barring a Chara-for-St.Louis swap today)

— Ian Mendes (@ian_mendes) April 3, 2013

There is still some time left before the deadline so I’m not counting out a Zdeno Chara, Martin St. Louis trade yet. Stranger things have happened.

<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-7200" title="NHL: Detroit Red Wings at St. Louis Blues Jan 19, 2013; St. Louis, MO, USA; St. Louis Blues right wing Vladimir Tarasenko (91) shoots and scores his second goal of the game as Detroit Red Wings defenseman Kyle Quincey (27) defends during the second period at the Scottrade Center.
Tarasenko edged out Cory Conacher of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Justin Schultz and Nail Yakupov of the Edmonton Oilers and Alex Galchenyuk of the Montreal Canadiens to win the prestigious honors. As of today, Tarasenko now has 10 points, followed by Conacher’s 9. Schultz, Yakupov and Galchenyuk each have 5 points.

The race for the Calder trophy which is presented to the rookie of the year is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent memory and will likely be the most watched in terms of potential NHL award winners this season.

Recently here at Too Many Men we looked at the top three candidates through the first two weeks of the season. At that time we had Schultz in the lead over Tarasenko based on the number of minutes he was playing on average for a rookie defenseman.

Tarasenko’s honors will surely help sway a few critics back his way but with over 40 games left for most clubs, there will be plenty of time to discuss who might be the top candidate for the Calder.
