The Montreal Canadiens announced yesterday that they have signed forward David Desharnais to a 4-year contract extension.

So far this season, Desharnais has 8 goals and 8 assists for 16 points. He is also currently playing center on the teams top line with Max Pacioretty and rookie Brendan Gallagher.

This is a big step up from his current contract, which was 2-years at 950,000 per season. Desharnais is set to make 14 million over the next 4 seasons with his new deal.

Many fans of the team were not happy about the contract he was given, saying things like “That’s too much for a 1-dimensional, 50-55pt scorer”. Other fans said that he has earned his new contract and he deserves it.

Either way, David Desharnais will wear a Habs uniform for 4 more seasons, unless of course he gets traded. But, i don’t see that happening at this point.

According to the Winnipeg Sun, the Winnipeg Jets are expected to send forward Mark Scheifele back to his junior club, the Barrie Colts. The move will likely happen Monday morning following Sunday’s game against the New York Islanders, a game that will be Scheifele’s fifth, putting him at the limit for junior eligible players.

<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-7072" title="NHL: Winnipeg Jets at Toronto Maple Leafs Oct 19, 2011; Toronto, ON, Canada; Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele (55) prepares to shoot against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.
But having the 19-year old stick with the big club is a long shot according to Paul Friesen of the Sun. Friesen believes that Scheifele’s fate was decided during training camp and that the Jets are keeping him around merely for the experience. He points to the fact that Scheifele has played on the fourth line for two of the team’s three games and was asked to play the wing. The other game he was at center, his natural position. The 7th overall pick in the 2010 draft is pointless on the season and is averaging just under ten minutes of ice-time.

To go one step further, Friesen points out that through the last two games the Jets have played, Scheifele’s ice-time has dropped below nine minutes while averaging just 12 shifts during that span. Hardly enough time for a budding prospect to develop his game while trying to stick with the big club.

Friesen also points out that Scheifele hasn’t been given a fair shake to try and impress the coaching staff thanks to the lockout erasing the pre-season games. With every game so crucial to making the playoffs, a team like the Jets can’t afford to experiment with a teenager who may or may not be ready to play in the NHL. At least that’s how the Winnipeg Jets feel.

There have been multiple roster moves out of St. Louis today and all centered around newly signed free agent, Wade Redden according to Andy Strickland via Twitter.

The Blues have activated Redden although it’s not expected that he’ll be in the lineup until later this week, likely Thursday against the Predators. the 35-year old hasn’t played in a NHL game in over two years since the New York Rangers buried him in the minor leagues after failing to live up to expectations that garnered him a 6-year, $39MM deal with blue shirts.

As a result of the Redden activation, the Blues needed to clear some roster space and have done so by placing defenseman, Jeff Woywitka on waivers. Like Redden, Woywitka was a first round draft choice but he too has been disappointing thus far in his NHL career, having bounced around with three different clubs in just seven seasons. This was Woywitka’s second stint with the Blue, the first coming back in 2005 when he was traded from the Edmonton Oilers as part of the Chris Pronger deal.

His best season came in 2008-09 when he scored 3 goals and added 15 assists in 65 games. Last year with the New York Rangers he appeared in 27 games, collecting 1 goal and 5 helpers.

Until Woywitka clears waivers the Blues have assigned defenseman, Ian Cole to the club’s AHL affiliate Peoria Rivermen. It is reported by Dave Eminian via twitter that Cole will be recalled once Woywitka is either claimed or assigned to the minors.
