The rebuild efforts for the Calgary Flames continued today when the club learnt that forward Roman Cervenka has signed on with the KHL according to Igor Eronko of Sports.ru.

<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-8731" title="NHL: Anaheim Ducks at Calgary Flames Apr 19, 2013; Calgary, Alberta, CAN; Calgary Flames center Roman Cervenka (10) skates with the puck against the Anaheim Ducks during the first period at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The Czech Republic native signed a one-year deal with the Flames prior to the 2012-13 season where he posted 9 goals and added 8 assists in 39 games. So far in the 27-year old’s hockey career, last season has been the only one he’s played in North America. The previous ten seasons Cervenka split between the KHL and the Czech pro leagues.

For the Flames, the loss could be considered a substantial one given Cervenka’s age and potential talent ceiling. A young center who isn’t an imposing body on the ice, Cervenka surely would have fit in nicely as the team’s third line center while the club attempts to reassemble the pieces in what they hope will be a playoff contending club.

With aging veterans still on the roster, the Flames could be one of the busier clubs this summer and now with the departure of Cervenka, it’s one more hole left to fill.

Flames’ GM Jay Feaster will have his work cut out for him if he plans on lifting this organization back into the postseason. Cervenka may not have been in the long-term plans for Feaster and the Flames and given his average numbers this past season, his game may be best suited for the KHL rather than the NHL. For Flames fans, they may never know now.

***Update – according to CSNNE.com, the Boston Bruins are “very close” to finalizing a contract with Swedish scoring sensation Carl Soderberg.

Joe Haggerty, the Bruins Insider reports that a source who is close to the situation claims the two sides are all but done and all that’s left is for Boston management to sift through the international processes of bringing him to North America. Haggerty mentions that the Bruins need to purchase Soderberg from his Swedish team Linkoping and ensure the IIHF has “signed off on the transaction.”

The Bruins could add Soderberg to their playoff roster providing he has a deal in place and is on the Bruins active roster prior to the end of the season.

************************************************

For the Boston Bruins, the trade deadline was a fairly successful one. Acquiring veteran Jaromir Jagr from the Dallas Stars after losing out on both Brenden Morrow and Jarome Iginla, the Bruins added some size and scoring and appear to be set for another deep playoff run.

Just because the trade deadline has passed doesn’t mean the Bruins aren’t finished tinkering with their roster though. According to NESN, the Bruins could sign Swedish forward Carl Soderberg to a NHL contract and bring him to the New England area in time for the cup run.

NESN reports that Soderberg was playing in the Swedish Elite League for the team of Linkopings HC and has since been eliminated from their playoffs after losing four straight to the Skelleftea AIK.

Reports out of Boston earlier this season had the Bruins signing Soderberg to a pro-contract and finally bringing the power forward to North America.

Standing in at 6-foot-3, Soderberg is the ideal model of a power forward that the Bruins like to have in their lineup. And he has a scoring touch to go with his rough style of play. This season in Sweden, Soderberg scored 31 goals and added 29 assists in 54 games. His 31 goals led the league.

Originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues, Soderberg was traded to the Bruins in 2007 but the club has yet to be able to convince him to come over to play in the NHL.

Bruins’ GM Peter Chiarelli isn’t getting too excited about the thought of adding Soderberg to the Bruins lineup based on his comments to NESN.

“I’m not hanging my hat on this. I hope to get him, and if we get him he will help us.”

As this story unfolds we’ll keep you up to date right here at Too Many Men.

The Minnesota Wild have signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Brett Clark according to Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune. The deal is said to be worth $900,000 on a prorated scale.

<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-7446" title="NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning at Buffalo Sabres Feb 11, 2012; Buffalo, NY, USA; Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Brett Clark (7) during the game against the Buffalo Sabres at the the First Niagara Center.
The Wild blue line has been a topic of discussion this season given the lack of experience they have on the back end. Russo points out that the Wild dressed five defenseman with 140 career NHL games or fewer on Sunday night against the experience Vancouver Canucks.

GM, Chuck Fletcher addressed the situation with a simple comment about signing Clark.

“You can never have enough defensemen.”

Russo notes that Clark has spent this season playing in Oklahoma City, registering almost a point per game. A stat that would stand out to many clubs looking to add a veteran defenseman.

Adding help on the blue line is a popular discussion around the NHL with multiple playoff bound clubs searching for upgrades on their back end. The Wild may have taken the proactive step by signing Clark ahead of the trade deadline and at the same time, avoided having to part ways with any of their promising young prospects.

The addition of Clark will bring the number of defenseman to eight for the Wild and Fletcher stated that he will consider carrying all eight NHL ready d-men for the remainder of the season.
