New York Rangers F Rick Nash is Rumored to be on the Trade Block Heading Into the Summer

New York Rangers F Rick Nash is reportedly garnering interest on the trade market as GM Jeff Gorton listens to offers.

Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet broke the news on Saturday night between intermissions on CBC/Sportnet’s broadcast of game four between San Jose and St.Louis.

As of right now, the Rangers have spent close to $60 million dollars for 2016-17, and it makes sense that New York looks to shed salary this summer. Other rumors suggest that defenseman Dan Girardi could also be on the move – although that may involve retaining partial salary.

With J.T. Miller, Chris Kreider, and Kevin Hayes all restricted free agents this summer, Jeff Gorton needs to find a way to make room for his young RFA’s while leaving some wiggle room to spend in free agency (at minimum).

Subtracting New York Rangers F Rick Nash from the payroll would open up nearly $8 million dollars over each of the next two seasons. Getting a trade completed might be easier said than done though.

“You’re going to hear a lot of wild rumours this year George, I think this is going to be a crazy season for them and one of the first to hit is Rick Nash of the New York Rangers,” Friedman said. “He has a 12-team list that he can be dealt to and there seems to be a little bit of smoke to this one. I think they’ve been asked. I think they’d be willing to do it under the right circumstances.

“However, there’s a couple things here. No. 1, he’s got a $7.8 million cap hit for two more seasons — how would that work? And No. 2 , while he struggled this year the Rangers really defended him. They felt that Nash played hurt and that affected his totals and I think they do look at it and say if he’s healthy next year he could be much more effective. But he’s going to be a name and the Rangers are going to be a team to watch.”

New York Rangers F Rick Nash: 5 Good Fits

Anaheim Ducks

Changes are expected for the Ducks this offseason. An opportunity to address that missing no.1 LW that has long been missing is an idea to at least mull over if you’re GM Bob Murray.

More from Puck Prose

Boston Bruins

This option hinges on pending UFA Loui Eriksson. They have a complete top-six with him in the lineup, however there’s a hole to fill if he walks.

Colorado Avalanche

The Avs need some help on the wing and the blueline. Perhaps these two clubs could muster up a multi-player deal to help address needs on both sides.

Nashville Predators

Perhaps one major offensive weapon away from being true Cup contenders? That’s what it looks like for the Preds following a disappointing finish in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Philadelphia Flyers

Call this unlikely. Ren Hextall did a great job freeing up cap space, but there’s still work to do. If Philly could get New York to take back similar salary (multiple players), New York Rangers F Rick Nash would be a great fit. He’s more of a sniper, but that might be just what Claude Giroux needs to be among the league leaders in points once again.
