CHL Memorial Cup Preview, Schedule, Notable Prospects

CHL Memorial Cup Will be Held in Red Deer, Alberta. Joining the host team Rebels is WHL Champion Brandon Wheat Kings, OHL Champion London Knights, and QMJHL Champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies

Winners have been crowned across the CHL as all three league’s recently wrapped up their postseason. It’s that time of year when we turn our attention to the MasterCard CHL Memorial Cup.

Red Deer won the right to host in 2016, and had a great year in the Western Hockey League (WHL). They eventually lost in the Eastern Conference Final to eventual Champion Brandon 4-1 – the Wheat Kings also beat the Seattle Thunderbirds in five games in the WHL Final.

Representing the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) is the London Knights. After dropping two games to Owen Sound in their opening series, Mitch Marner and the Knights swept their next three opponents, which included the Niagara Ice Dogs in the OHL Final.

Coming out of the Q (QMJHL – Quebec Major Junior Hockey League) is the same team that dominated all regular season. Rouyn-Noranda dropped two games to Moncton in the Semi-Final, but made quick work of a very good Shawinigan team capturing the Presidents’ Cup in five games.

Among the 23 drafted NHL prospects participating in this year’s CHL Memorial Cup, the Toronto Maple Leafs have the most with three (Marner, Piccinich, and Dzierkals). A few other teams have a couple, including Colorado, St.Louis, Winnipeg, and Boston.

Looking ahead to 2017, Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) Windsor Spitfires were recently named host city for next year. The Spitfires are expected to be among the OHL’s best in 2016-17.
