Drummondville Voltigeurs F Mathieu Sevigny is number six on our list in a series dedicated to draft-eligible prospects with current or past family ties to the NHL. Mathieu is the son of former NHLer Pierre Sevigny, drafted 51st overall (3rd round) by Montreal back in 1989.

Matthew Tkachuk, Jakob Chychrun, Alex Nylander, Kieffer Bellows, and Logan Brown are the first names to come to mind for 2016 draft-eligible prospects with current/or former NHL bloodline’s.
Both Keith Tkachuk and Michael Nylander had long, successful careers. Brian Bellows played nearly 1200 games, producing more than 1000 points. Jeff Brown also had a solid career posting 585 points in 747 points from the back-end. Jeff Chychrun was a 1984 draft pick, a veteran of 262 games playing until 1993-94, finishing his career with AHL Cape Breton.

Father: Pierre Sevigny
Pierre was taken in the 3rd round in 1989 after posting 70 points in 67 games with QMJHL’s Verdun Jr. Canadiens.

He spent the next two years in the QMJHL playing for St.Hyacinthe Lasers. In 1989-90, Sevigny produced 119 points, and 205 penalty minutes in 67 games. He followed that up with 82 points, and 203 penalty minutes in 1990-91.
Pierre Sevigny spent the next two seasons with AHL’s Frederiction Canadiens. He posted 59 points and 145 penalty minutes his AHL rookie season in 1991-92. He increased his point total to 76 points, adding 113 penalty minutes in 1992-93.
A promotion saw Pierre spend the next two season with Montreal, but he struggled to get in the lineup. In 1993-94, Pierre appeared in 43 games, posting nine points, and 42 penalty minutes. He only played 19 games in 1994-95, not even reaching the scoresheet, only accumulating 15 penalty minutes.
Sevigny spent the entire 1995-96 season with AHL Fredericton, tallying 81 points, and 188 penalty minutes in 76 games. He also added 14 points in 10 playoff contests.
In his last year with Montreal in 1996-97, Sevigny played 13 games, posting zero points, and five penalty minutes. He joined the New York Rangers in 1997-98, appearing in his final three NHL games. He spent most of that season with AHL Hartford, producing 31 points in 40 games.
Pierre Sevigny spent the 1998-99 season in the IHL, splitting time between Orlando and Long Beach. He spent his last three years of pro hockey with AHL’s Quebec Citadelles between 1999-20 to 2001-02. Sevigny bounced around a few different lower level leagues in Quebec and Europe before retiring in 2006.
Pierre Facts:
– He spent one year as assistant coach for QMJHL’s Quebec Ramparts in 2013-14.
– Pierre was part of Team Canada’s Gold Medal Championship at the World Juniors in 1991 – a team that featured players such as Trevor Kidd/Felix Potvin in net. They also had Scott Niedermayer and Eric Lindros among many other former NHLers.
– Sevigny was selected 1st overall by now defunct Verdun Jr. Canadiens at the 1988 QMJHL Entry Draft.

Mathieu made the jump from AA in 2012-13 to AAA in 2013-14. After posting 15 points in 42 games (adding five points in 10 playoff games) with Seminaire St-Francois Blizzard, he was selected 17th overall by Drummondville at the 2014 QMJHL Entry Draft.
Joining the Voltigeurs in 2014-15, Sevigny posted 19 points in 62 games as a rookie. He also suited up for Canada Red at the U17 World Hockey Challenge, producing two points in five games. He is since in his 2nd season with Drummondville in 2015-16, and the 6’0 172lbs center should hear his name called in June at the 2016 NHL Draft.

“Sevigny gets in quickly on the forecheck, pressuring opposing defenders to move the puck quickly and creating turnovers in the offensive zone. He battles for loose pucks along the wall, and gets to the front of the net. He brings his tenacious game to his own end of the rink as well, supporting the defence with a strong back check, and battling for loose pucks. Sevigny is a smart player with good positioning, and his long active stick is used to break up passes and create turnovers.”
