World Cup of Hockey – Team Sweden 16-Player Roster Prediction

Sweden walks into the World Cup of Hockey as the arguable favorites to win Division B.

They’ve included Swedish hockey royalty on this year’s coaching staff with Daniel Alfredsson, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Mats Sundin on the Advisory Board – while Peter Forsberg serves as Vice President/Team Leader.

With the way Sweden is developing goaltenders and defensemen, they should continue to be powerhouses on the International stage for many years to come.

Coaching Staff:

Tommy Boustedt, General Secretary (Swedish Ice Hockey Association Development Chief)
Rickard Gronborg, Head Coach (Swedish Men’s National Team Head Coach)
Johan Garpenlov, Assistant Coach
Peter Popovic, Assistant Coach (Tre Konor Assistant Coach)
Daniel Alfredsson, Advisory Board
Nicklas Lidstrom, Advisory Board
Mats Sundin, Advisory Board
Peter Forsberg, Vice President/Team Leader

Rules and Format:

More from International Tournaments

2016 NHL World Cup of Hockey will feature eight teams (Team Canada, Team USA, Team Russia, Team Sweden, Team Czech Republic, Team Finland, Team North America, Team Europe). The tournament will be held in September 2016, and is a group effort with the NHL and NHLPA, in association with International Ice Hockey Federation.

The rules differ from that of IIHF held tournaments, and will follow NHL rules, with games being played on NHL-sized ice surfaces. Because of the league’s involvement, fans can expect to see far less European players than we’re used to seeing at World Championships or Olympics in the 2016 NHL World Cup of Hockey.

It’s difficult to imagine that one of Anders Lindback, Anders Nilsson, Jhonas Enroth, Linus Ullmark, or Jonas Gustavsson can beat out any of the three goalies named above. They can name all three to allow for extra time on more debatable spots.

Sweden is one of the few teams that can name six defensemen on Wednesday. The players named above stand out from the rest. Fighting for that last spot on the back-end is Oscar Klefbom, Jonas Brodin, Hampus Lindholm, Anton Stralman, Alex Edler, Johnny Oduya, Nicklas Grossmann, Toby Enstrom, Klas Dahlbeck, and Mattias Ekholm.

Realistically speaking, the Swedes can name upwards of 20 of the total 23 names for the final roster right now. If they choose to select an extra goalie and blueliner, it will allow for extra time to select six players up front, opposed to three or four. Names vying for those six other roster slots include Andre Burakovsky, Alex Wennberg, Mika Zibanejad, Gustav Nyquist, Alex Steen, Marcus Johansson, Jakob Silfverberg, Patric Hornqvist, Oscar Lindberg, Calle Jarnkrok, Elias Lindholm, Carl Soderberg, Carl Hagelin, Mikael Backlund, Mattias Janmark, Marcus Kruger, Rickard Rakell, Melker Karlsson, and Patrik Berglund.
