Panthers release David Booth from PTO

Annouced Wednesday afternoon, 30-year-old David Booth has been released from his professional tryout contract. The window is closing for him to earn a job with an NHL club, but he may get lucky like Curtis Glencross if some other team wants to pick him up. Otherwise, we could see Booth taking his skills overseas to Europe this season.

Preds send Moses, Sissons, and Saros to AHL

In a bit of a surprising move, the Predators have sent winger Steve Moses down to the AHL. It was only a month ago when Nashville said it would open the season with Cody HodgsonCalle Jarnkrok – Steve Moses on their third line. Goes to prove how much a bad showing in training camp can effect a player. Moses was the leading goal scorer in the KHL last year, but sounds like he’s having trouble adjusting to North America style play. A couple top 10 prospects for the Preds were also sent down in Colton Sissons and Juuse Saros.

Perhaps not as surprising of a move saw Edmonton send their prized prospect Darnell Nurse to the AHL. I think fans would be more disappointed than surprised. The hope was that he could elevate his game enough to be competitive at the NHL level, but it sounds as though he’ll need some seasoning. Not to worry Oilers fans, you know how young defense can work sometimes. Patience is the key. Also being sent down was Martin Gernat, Mitchell Moroz, and Iiro Pakarinen, bring the training camp number down to 28.

Avs send Hishon, Bigras, and Pickard plus 4 others down to AHL

The Avalanche sent three talented young players down to the AHL to begin the season. Forward Joey Hishon, Defenseman Chris Bigras, and Goalie Calvin Pickard. Hishon has spent some time with Colorado as a call-up and looks as though it’ll be the same situation again this year, at least to start. Bigras is less of a surprise but one of the top prospects in the Avs system. Calvin Pickard played well in the AHL last year, and he’s probably better than Reto Berra just slightly. But the Avs would prefer to give their young netminder with a potential starter ability a bigger workload so the move makes sense. By sending down 7 players, the Avalanche were able to trim their roster to 30.
