Training Camp: News & Notes

After a few days of NHL training camps, there is already a handful of stories to discuss. So instead of navigating through three days worth of articles mixed with season previews on nhl.com, we’re going to make life a little easier for you. Below I’ll share everything you need to know from NHL training camps from the beginning through Sunday.

Bruins beat Devils, Preds play doubleheader with Panthers on Sunday
Matt Irwin scores 2 goals on the PP against New Jersey in a 2-0 win, while Jeremy Smith and Jonas Gustavsson combine for the shutout on Sunday. F Seth Griffith left the game with an undisclosed lower body injury, and did not return.
Filip Forsberg scores 2 goals and Ryan Ellis gets 3 assists as the Predators win 5-2 against Florida on Sunday. Later, they completed their doubleheader with Florida winning 3-2 after 3-on-3 overtime.
Marko Dano impresses early and earns spot on line with Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa
Well that didn’t take long. Of course there’s nothing to ensure that he stays in a top 6 role to open the season. It is worth noting that my #4 Bold Prediction from last week was that Marko Dano would finish the season in a top 6 role and be looked at as the prized piece in the Saad trade.
Teams already start trimming rosters
Toronto Maple Leafs send 10 to AHL. Carolina Hurricanes trimmed their roster by 8 down to 49. Arizona Coyotes assigned 4 players to Junior, bringing total to 56 players in camp. The Calgary Flames sent 4 players to junior and release one from training camp. Nashville Predators sent two guys back to Junior bringing total to 51 players.
Oilers give Klefbom 7-year extension
Edmonton made a statement signing a young guy with only 77 games experience by giving D Oscar Klefbom a 7-year extension. The Oilers believe he can be a top 2 or top 4 guy moving forward.
First overall draft pick Connor McDavid continues to impress at Oilers camp. On Sunday, Edmonton played a blue-white scrimmage where McDavid scored two goals and added an assist. Chemistry seems to be building between him and Taylor Hall.
KHL transfer Artemi Panarin impresses at Hawks camp
Brian Hedger of NHL.com reported the following, “Playing left wing on a line with highly-touted Finnish center Teuvo Teravainen and fellow Russian forward Viktor Tikhanov, Panarin has shown high-end skill in three scrimmages held at Compton Family Ice Arena. He scored a goal Saturday during 5-on-5 play that tied the game for his team, set up two goals in 3-on-3 play and has shown great vision thus far. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville has noticed. ”
Lars Eller moved to left wing in Montreal
Last week, Montreal announced Alex Galchenyuk would be moved to center this season. Speculation as to who goes to the wing was answered Friday when Galchenyuk lined up in between Alex Semin to his right and Lars Eller to his left.
Zidlicky signs one-year deal with Islanders
After doing a fairly decent job for the Red Wings after coming over at the trade deadline, it was somewhat surprising to watch this vet go the entire summer without being offered a contract. Looks as though the Islanders have been impressed with Zidlicky thus far and he managed to earn himself a 1-year 1.5 million dollar contract.
Josh Ho-Sang sent back to junior on day one of Islanders training camp
Josh Ho-Sang was sent back to junior on the first day of training camp for being late. His character has been largely called into question, the same reason he slipped so far down in the draft. After being slated to skate with John Tavares and Anders Lee, this is a little baffling. As a young hockey player, knowing you’re opening camp with Tavares and Lee, would you not be among one of the first players to arrive? Most guys would be overly eager for that opportunity. This is a curious one for the future.
