Boston Bruins Rebuild: Time To Be Honest

When you think of the Boston Bruins I’m assuming you think of a hard-hitting team with edge and grit. But, that is the Boston Bruins of your youth; this year’s Bruins team may be a letdown and that’s okay by me. The once Stanley Cup contenders are looking more like an aging rebuilding franchise. Once dominate and intimidating the opportunity for another Stanley Cup banner has faded into the background and uncertainty is left in its place.

The Boston Bruins front office is in a state of denial or at the very least they don’t feel they can admit to their fan base that this is the start of a rebuild. When you start to move players and your core ages you are forced to rebuild. The only other option is to spend money without cause. But, let’s ask the Rangers how that’s going. Boston was a good if not great team, but now they will be just another average team trying to keep themselves in the playoff conversation.

"I don’t think it’s a rebuild. We didn’t strip this down,” Sweeney said in June, per NHL.com. “We have a tremendous core group of guys that are going to obviously carry an even heavier load here in the short-term while these other kids can come in and start to take footing.” [PHT]"

If they are able to do that this year’s NHL trade deadline will be a lot of fun in Boston. Boston’s current roster has 15 players 25-years-old or older and of those five players over 30-years-old. By NHL standards the Bruins locker room is turning into an old folk’s home. It’s time for the Boston Bruins to be honest and admit that they need a rebuild.

The problem with admitting you need a rebuild is you are basically telling your fans that the next few years will be hell on ice. All you need to do is look at Buffalo and Edmonton. Just ask their fans what the past two years have been like. Part of this mess is pride and living off the past; it’s time that the Bruins man up and get their franchise back to the days of being a threat.

You cannot live on memories alone, and right now that could be all that the Boston Bruins have to fuel their tanks.
