New York Rangers Glen Sather May Give up General Manager Position
Could this really be true? Will Glen Sather no longer be the general manager of the New York Rangers and only focus on his role as president of the team? According to email exchanges with Larry Brooks of the New York Post that may be the case.
"Sather, who has a “lifetime contract” with Garden CEO Jim Dolan, has held the dual position of club president-GM since June 2000. It is believed the 71-year-old, a finalist for the NHL’s GM of the Year Award, is contemplating whether to step up exclusively into the presidency.Assistant GM Jeff Gorton, who has held that role for the last four years while handling an increasing amount of the day-to-day operations within the hockey department, would be the clear-cut front-runner to succeed Sather if he indeed steps down/up."
I never thought I would see the day when Sather would step down on his own accord. I honestly thought he would be the Rangers GM until he died. I hope this news to be true.
I think the Rangers need someone else, someone with a different vision to take the reins. The team has become much better in recent years, but is still in a Cup drought (21 long years).
If Sather does step down, Gorton would likely take over. He knows the team and has been a major player in the team’s recent success. It might do the Rangers well to have him take on more responsibilities in team personnel.

Other teams have reportedly asked to talk to Gorton but the Rangers said no. This is why people are starting to believe that Gorton will be the next GM. It is also a plus that other teams were interested, it means he was doing something right.
I am ready to see Sather go. For the majority of the Cup drought he has been at the helm of the team. Sure, he has done some great things, but the Rangers has tried new coaches, adding new players and still it doesn’t win the Cup. Maybe it’s time to change management.
One thing I hope Gorton doesn’t do if he takes over is trade for players past their prime or put together ridiculously long contracts worth too much. Sather has done this over the years and it just has never worked out in the Rangers’ favor.
I am really interested to see what the Rangers can put together under the leadership of someone else. Now, we just have to wait to see if Sather decides to hand over the power.
