NHL Trade Deadline: Interesting Teams For Monday

facebooktwitterreddit

Plenty of action has preceded the NHL trade deadline.  These are a few teams you can expect to be active as 3pm Monday gets closer.

The NHL trade deadline has already produced sizable moves with surprising returns.  Did the New York Rangers need to give up that much for Keith Yandle?  Is Ken Holland done making moves in Detroit?  The Buffalo Sabres were quiet Sunday, weren’t they?

Rumors continue to fly as the last hours of the NHL trade deadline ticks closer.  These are a few teams (and players) I think will be interesting to watch as Monday ramps up:

  • Boston Bruins – for a team hanging on to a wild card spot the Bruins were quiet on Sunday.  Not that there wasn’t chatter just nothing that came to fruition.  With Antoine Vermette, Erik Cole and Curtis Glencross traded the forward the Bruins continue to be connected with is Chris Stewart in Buffalo.  Considering how well Arizona did in trading Vermette, Stewart may fetch a first round pick as the deadline creeps closer.  Whether the Sabres power forward or not, expect the Bruins chatter to pick up in light of the Jaromir Jagr trade and trying to hold the surging Florida Panthers at bay.

Toronto Maple Leafs – the masterful trade of David Clarkson for Nathan Horton was a great way to start changing the fortunes of the Maple Leafs.  Getting Dion Phaneuf out of the Toronto pressure cooker with be another.  Not that Phaneuf has been awful but both he and the Maple Leafs need this partnership to be over.  The hottest rumor has Phaneuf connected with the Detroit Red Wings to shore up their blue line.  Is Dion Phaneuf‘s contract immovable until the offseason?  You would have said that about Clarkson, too.

Nashville Predators – the Predators made their big move acquiring Cody Franson but with the Blackhawks being so aggressive, don’t expect Nashville to sit back.  They don’t need goaltending with the tandem of Pekka Rinne and Carter Hutton and the blue line has already been upgraded.  Look for Nashville to be in on affordable secondary scoring or third line leadership.  This team has hummed all year and doesn’t have to overpay to bring a player in.  That doesn’t mean the dominoes won’t fall and change that, and GM David Poile hasn’t been shy in acting.

St. Louis Blues – the injury to Kevin Shattenkirk has put the Blues on the market for a defenseman. While the Blues have missed on Yandle and Andrej Sekera, it appears Jeff Petry from Edmonton is a different story. While that would be a big and important move, don’t expect the Blues to be terribly active. Petry could be the one move the Blues make to shore up the team but GM Doug Armstrong isn’t going to over pay for anyone in a trade and has a team that affords him the luxury of patience to the point of inaction.  But is standing pat the right play considering the Blues lack of playoff success?

Buffalo Sabres – it’s not exactly breaking news that the Sabres will have an active Monday.  Stewart, Michal Neuvirth and Torrey Mitchell are expected moves as unrestricted free agents.  But the Sabres have an extra first round pick, a deep pool of defensive prospects and a GM willing to make moves to set the Sabres up for success in the not to distant future.  Tim Murray won’t be trading away pieces for the sake of acquiring draft picks alone.  But is there another trade to make similar to that which brought in Evander Kane?  The Buffalo Sabres are interesting at the NHL trade deadline because of Murray’s unpredictability.

Monday’s are not typically days people look forward to.  But March 2nd isn’t a typical Monday.  Keep checking back here for your updated trade tracker as the NHL trade deadline unfolds during its final hours.
