Martin Brodeur Thinks The NHL Needs To Change A Few Things

It didn’t take long for Martin Brodeur to let his thoughts be known; in a recent interview with Elliotte Friedman Brodeur spoke about a few changes he thinks the NHL needs to make. It seems that Brodeur major complaint is the speed of the game, and how players are not allowed to protect each other. That brings a few things to mind, but none of them the NHL would like. It’s unclear in the interview but Martin Brodeur was around when there was not instigator rule, and players could police the game to a point. Maybe most of the NHL’s problem stem from that. You can watch the video from Sports Net here.

As a now former goaltender Brodeur has now gone on record saying the NHL should get rid of the trapezoid. That stupid thing was put in so goaltender couldn’t

get involved with the play outside their “given” area. That in Brodeur’s opinion and my own is in part to blame for the hard, dirty hits we see happening behind the net and in the corners. If the trapezoid was removed goaltenders could once again be allowed to play the game and help their teammates. Having the ability to go play the puck and come out of their net more often could help slow players down when they come racing into zone.

"The trapezoid has to go. I think the goalies have to help their players a little bit more, but a lot of the hits come because there’s no interference, Brodeur said. Put in the interference on the table for the players to use to help each other. [PHT]"

I’m not sure how you get players to slow down, but at 42-years-old Brodeur does think the game has gotten too fast and too dangerous. While fans like the speed of the game I do think he may have a point. Player’s skating at over 25 MPH with no regard for anyone else on the ice is a dangerous thing. Brodeur went on to say “It’s too tough of a game, too dangerous of a game. I think it goes… all the speed that they wanted to bring into the game, it kind of makes it up on those tough hits and it’s hard for the players to police themselves. First of all because fighting is going away from the game,” said Brodeur. “You have a lot of guys that are taking liberties and some guys they don’t, but because the game is so fast, they don’t have time to react to a lot of things.”

Now on the outside looking in Martin Brodeur is facing the reality that the game he played so well for so long is not the game he started out playing, and after walking away it’s clear that there is a good deal about today’s NHL game the legend is not content with. I agree the NHL has gone too far to ramp up speed and goals; taking away from the defensive aspects of the game. But, that is state of professional sports today.

It would be nice if former players were added to a comity that analyzed and suggested changes to the game. I realize that rule changes come about every year, but how often do players that just retired get the chance to voice their thought. Other than current NHL players no other person could give such valuable information.
