The Buffalo Sabres are a mess, but that didn’t stop their fans from getting together over the weekend. Like most teams in the NHL the Sabres have many different fan pages. One of them stepped up huge. Buffalo BlueandGold has over 1800 “members” and they joined up with Sabres alumni Andrew Peters to help raise money for a local  family trying to complete a BMX park in memory of their son.

Fly High Ride Free Bryce is only around because of a heart breaking loss that struck a family. Bryce was only 14-years-old when his life was cut short by a drunk driver.

"On May 3, 2012, 14 year old Bryce Buchholz life was cut short by a drunk driver while riding his bike with friends. Bryce was so proud of his “Sunday Orange Soda” BMX bike. Riding with friends was his favorite things to do. Bryce was not only known for his cool orange bike, but for the laughter, smiles and friendship he brought wherever he went. This senseless tragedy not only devastated his family and friends, but an entire community. As a group we have united to search for something positive for his family and friends to do in Bryce’s honor. We all agreed that due to the ever growing popularity of BMX biking & skateboarding, that we needed a safe place for our kids to go and ride. Opening a bike park in honor of Bryce was that something positive we were searching for. With overwhelming support from our community, and in collaboration with LEAF (Lancaster Educational Alumni Foundation) we have raised funds and are now set to begin construction with California Skate parks Design & Construction firm of a 12,000 square foot bike park within Lancaster’s  Keysa Park dedicated to Bryce’s memory. We feel very strongly about creating a positive message and a sobering statement about the tragic results of drinking and driving. This bike park will serve as a constant reminder to anyone even considering mixing alcohol and driving. With your generous donation this project will become a reality. A memorial fund has been created to accept your donation in memory of Bryce. The Bryce Buchholz Fund is currently accepting donations at ANY First Niagara Bank. You may also send your donations to The Bryce Buchholz Fund at P.O. Box 132, Tonawanda, NY 14151 or you can make a payment online using PayPal by clicking the donate button on this website. We greatly appreciate your contribution and we are assured that with your help that his memory and our message to never drink and drive will continue to thrive on for many years to come.Thank You, Family & Friends of Bryce"

This event made over $1300 and efforts will continue. As many of you know NHL players both current and past are well known for stepping up when things go wrong. Peters did just that on Saturday. He came to an event and was more than happy to have his picture taken and talk a little hockey with Sabres fans.

While this is not a typical article for this site, maybe it should be. After all we are all part of a fan base and we all have seen our teams and players go above and beyond to help the town and cities they play for.

NHL hockey is a form of entertainment and at time we take it for granted. The players and teams however often help their fans, and in turn we had fans helping their community. The hockey world is really one big family, and when things take a dark turn hockey fans will be there to try and make something good happen.
