NHL News and Links - Quick Shifts: August 30th Edition

NHL Quick Shifts is a daily series where we gather up the latest NHL news and links from the FanSided NHL blogosphere, as well as other NHL / hockey blogs. So with that, here is today’s edition of Quick Shifts!

  • NHL expansion would benefit the Arizona Coyotes – If the NHL does decide to expand to markets like Las Vegas, Seattle, Québec City, or Kansas City, the Arizona Coyotes would stand to benefit. Not only would it take potential relocation options off the map, but the expansion fee payout would provide some much needed revenue to the Coyotes ownership group. Arizona is already making some strides in that area with a new arena naming rights deal and the revenue received from the NHL-Canadian television deal. [USA Today]
  • Jim Rutherford Under Pressure As Penguins Season Looms – Traditionally, a new GM is given some time to turn things around, after an offseason that saw the head coach and general manager fired. However, Jim Rutherford is the GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who have two of the best offensive talents in the NHL on their roster. The Penguins have underwhelmed in the playoffs since winning the Stanley Cup in 2009 and despite the tumultuous offseason, they are expected to be contenders once again. The Penguins time is running out, therefore there is little time for Rutherford to grow into the job. [Pens Labyrinth]
  • NHL ’15 Demo Thoughts – I’ll admit I haven’t played the NHL series of games since the 2013 edition (released in 2012), mostly due to the fact that the releases started to feel like $60 roster updates. Sure small additions were made each year, but nothing really ground breaking. NHL 15 will be the first release with Xbox One and PS4 in mind, so a vast improvement in visuals is to be expected. Examiner took a look at the demo for the game and gave their thoughts. NHL 15 will be released  on September 9th. [Examiner]
