NHL News and Links - Quick Shifts: August 24th Edition

NHL Quick Shifts is a daily series where we gather up the latest NHL news and links from the FanSided NHL blogosphere, as well as other NHL / hockey blogs. So with that, here is today’s edition of Quick Shifts!

  • Will the Penguins take a step back in 2014-15? – The overhaul of the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2014 offseason is a rare occurrence for a franchise that has been a contender every season since the 04-05 lockout. However, the Penguins have only won a single Stanley Cup with the one of the better lineups assembled since the Oilers of the late 80s. As a result of the sweeping changes in the front office and behind the bench (as well as several core players) this is the first time in several years where the consensus going into the start of the season is that the Penguins may have an off year. • Calgary Flames sign Devin Setoguchi – The Calgary Flames have signed Devin Setoguchi to a one-year, $750,000 deal. Setoguchi made his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks, and has most recently played for the Minnesota Wild and Winnipeg Jets. [Flame For Thought]
  • Goal celebration of the year? Watch Ric Del Basso slide down the ice on head – Puck Daddy may have the best candidate for goal celebration of the year we will see. Ric Del Basso of the Perth Thunder (Australian Ice Hockey League) scored the game winner in a 5-4 shootout win. Del Basso was going for a summersault, but ended up sliding down the ice on his head. Thankfully this occurred in Australia, as had it been the NHL, we would now have to endure a week of “act like you’ve been there before, kid!” rants. [Puck Daddy]
