NHL Quick Shifts is a daily series where we gather up the latest NHL news and links from the FanSided NHL blogosphere, as well as other NHL / hockey blogs. So with that, here is today’s edition of Quick Shifts!

  • The first annual DiPietro award – The NHL Awards tend to highlight the more positive aspects of the NHL. However, wouldn’t things be a little more fun if we also highlighted some of the mistakes teams made? How about the “Don Koharski Golden Donut” for the worst call by an official? Or in the case of this article from TMMOTS, the DiPietro award, given to the player with the most ridiculous contract that is never likely to be completed. [TMMOTS]
  • NHL: 5 teams that will surprise you in 2014-15 – At this time time in the NHL offseason, we often start to see predictions being made for the upcoming season. We tend to forget that the previous season taught us that hockey is an unpredictable game, and there will always be surprises along the way. With that cautionary statement about making predictions stated, over at FanSided they took a look at five teams that could surprise you during the 2014-15 NHL season. [FanSided]
  • Maple Leafs hiring Extraskater.com founder, creating analytics department – If you feared that the Leafs hiring Kyle Dubas was simply the franchise trying to make it appear they were adopting advanced stats, it appears you can now rest easily. The Toronto Maple Leafs intend to create an entire analytics department, and also bring in Darryl Metcalf, founder of popular advanced stats site, Extraskater.com. Also included in the new department will be Cam Charron and Rob Pettapiece, who both worked for Yahoo sports. Unfortunately for hockey fans and bloggers (and other teams that used Metcalf’s data), Extraskater is going to cease operations; our loss is the Maple Leafs gain. [Puck Daddy]
