Thomas Vanek is in the news for what seems to be all the wrong reasons. Only a week after signing a deal to play with the Minnesota Wild, Vanek has been connected to a federal gambling investigation.
It’s not all bad for Vanek, it has been reported that the Federal Government has asked him for his cooperation, and he is not officially under investigation. A Pro Hockey Talk report shines more light on the case. But, no matter how the chips fall, Thomas Vanek will face questions that will need to be answered. The NHL is going to want details, and the Minnesota Wild may have made a bad bet.
If Thomas Vanek was betting that joining the Wild would be the time of his life, I guess he forgot about life in Rochester. Let me be clear about one thing, there are no public reports of Vanek being involved in a gambling ring, but when the Government asks for your cooperation in an investigation, it is normally because they have something on you.
Representatives of the U.S. Federal Government have asked for my cooperation in an investigation. I am not the subject of any investigation or prosecution. I will fully cooperate with the U.S. Federal authorities in their investigation or in any proceedings arising out of it. [PHT]
Hopefully this is nothing more than a NHL player associating with the wrong crowd, but if he has been involved in questionable activities, Vanek really should know better.
It has been reported that Vanek’s former teammate Nathan Paetsch, is “involved in a partnership” with the three main suspects in the gambling ring. The extent of that partnership is unclear, and could have nothing to do with the investigation, but its one more connection to Vanek being too close to a bad situation.
