  • Ekblad Selected 1st Overall By The Panthers – The Rat Trick has their reaction to the Florida Panthers deciding to hold on to their first overall pick to select defenseman Aaron Ekblad. While Anthony Murphy hoped the Panthers would trade away the pick, he is content with the Panthers decision, mostly due to Ekblad wanting to play in Florida. It is difficult for defensemen to make an impact early in their career, but the Panthers may have found the only one who is NHL ready in the 2014 NHL Draft. Frozen Futures, FanSided’s NHL Prospects blog also has their take on Ekblad going first overall, as well as a look at the type of impact he can have on the Panthers roster. • New York Rangers Surprise Fans By Moving Dorsett –  The majority of trade talks by New York Rangers fans were scenarios involving Brian Boyle, Anton Stralman, and Dominic Moore. However, it was Derek Dorsett who ended up getting traded on Day 1 of the 2014 NHL Draft. Dorsett was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a third pick (received from Anaheim in the Ryan Kesler trade). Dorsett arrived in New York with John Moore and Derick Brassard via the Columbus Blue Jackets trade for Marian Gaborik. Dorsett played 51 games over one and a half seasons with the Rangers, scoring four goals and four assists. Dorsett missed 31 games in 2013-14 due to a lower body injury. Dorsett was due to make $1.63 million this season, and with the cap being set at $69 million, the Rangers needed to move some salary. [ Blue Line Station ]
