During TSN’s radio coverage, prior to the draft, they spoke with Toronto Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis. Nonis was asked if he drafted to meet need or picked the best available player, and, like nearly every GM I have ever heard, he said he would take the best available player. What he then did was what most don’t….he said why.
Most analysts say that by the time a draft pick makes it to the NHL you don’t know what you will need butNonis said (this is a paraphrase as I was driving), “We aren’t just drafting a player but an asset, if we want to move him for a need down the road we want to have the best player to make a deal with.”
Now let’s see if Nonis can actually pick the best available player since the Maple Leafs haven’t had a good record on that since ’67.
