NBC Sports Releases Game 4 TV Ratings

Despite fears that a 3-0 Los Angeles Kings lead in the Stanley Cup Final would potentially hurt television ratings, last night’s Game 4 was the third most watched Stanley Cup Final on the NBC Sports Network. Only last year’s Game 2 and Game 3 between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Boston Bruins did better. With the Stanley Cup Final appearing to be a one-sided affair, there were fears that the casual fan would not tune in. Perhaps the fact that Games 1-3 have been exciting, despite Los Angeles winning all three, served to keep viewers returning for more. The possibility of the Stanley Cup being awarded last night served to help things as well.

The NBC Sports Twitter account had a list of the Top 6 viewer markets for last night’s game:

It is not surprising that New York and Los Angeles come out on top, but Buffalo and Providence are. It appears there are more Rangers fans in Buffalo and New England than Sabres and Bruins fans would like to admit.

The 8.1 rating in New York is the second best for the city on NBCSN, only this year’s Game 6 with the Montreal Canadiens performed better (8.5). Its 7.3 rating set a new record for Los Angeles.

Game 4 of last year’s Stanley Cup Final between the Blackhawks and Bruins aired on NBC, not NBCSN, so we cannot compare the growth over the last year, but the 2012 Game 4 between the Kings and Devils did.

Hockey still has some growing to do when compared to the NBA, NFL, and MLB, but each year, more people are tuning into the Stanley Cup Final. The remaining games between the Kings and the Rangers will air on NBC.
