The Pittsburgh Penguins have high hope of winning the Stanley Cup, and who could blame them they have the league’s leading scorer Sidney Crosby. Unfortunately, the Penguins have opened Pandora’s Box today.
New broke earlier today that Pittsburgh has called up Tomas Vokoun from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Vokoun will be the safety net for when Marc-Andre Fleury suffers his yearly post-season meltdown.
As Fleury’s backup last season Vokoun went 13-4-3 in 20 regular-season games, and then replaced Fleury during the Penguins’ first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series against the New York Islanders. In 11 playoff games he went 6-5 with a 2.01 GAA and .933 save percentage NHL.com
Tomas Vokoun has missed the entire NHL regular season after a blood clot was discovered in his pelvis during training camp. The 37 year-old is looking for one more run at the Cup, and if history repeats itself he may get that chance.
The problem here is that Fleury seems to have a post season confidence problem and putting Vokoun behind him won’t help. This post-season should have been Fleury’s year, he needs to show he has the ability to rise to the occasion. Despite having a Stanley Cup on his résumé, Fleury has failed to regain his champion form. The 29 year-old has a career playoff SV% of .903. Well below Vokoun’s .917.
Head coach Dan Bylsma may be under a microscope, he has mismanaged his goaltenders for years. You cannot have some of the top talent and only come away with one Stanley Cup. If this post season goes south; Bylsma should be fired. After all he helped opened Pandora’s Box.
