As we approach the start of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, Too Many Men On The Site will be taking a look at the teams that have qualified. Included will be stats, record, and why they will and will not win the Stanley Cup. Next up are the Chicago Blackhawks.

Scoring Leaders

  1. Patrick Sharp (33 G, 43 A, 76 points)
  2. Patrick Kane (29 G, 40 A, 69 points)
  3. Jonathan Toews (28 G, 40 A, 68 points)

Why The Blackhawks Will Win The Stanley Cup

The main reason the Blackhawks will win the Stanley Cup is it is theirs to lose. They are the defending champs, and the main core of the team is still playing for Chicago. They have a solid goaltender in Corey Crawford who has a record of 31-15-10-2 (2.22 GAA, .918 SV%). Having a goalie like Crawford in net allows the Blackhawks offense to take more chances, and push the puck up the ice; putting pressure on their opponents. Chicago has gone 6-4 in the last ten games, but that has been in large part due to several injuries. Once the playoffs start-up the Blackhawks have two of the NHL’s top stars in Kane , and Toews, and they know how to carry the team on their backs. Experience is a big deal come this time of year and Chicago has it.

The hardest part for the Blackhawks will be making it through to the Conference finals, once there I believe they can handle just about any team the Pacific Division has to offer (14-1-4).

Why The Blackhawks Will Not Win the Stanley Cup

Chicago has a long round to win the Cup again. It is very hard to win back to back championships in the NHL. It will take luck and the Blackhawks will need to avoid the injury bug. Some people had Chicago as the odds on favorite to win the Cup when the season started, but finishing third in the newly formed Central Division wasn’t not in the plans. Chicago will need to out last the St. Louis Blues, and that will prove to be no easy task. Chicago has been on the receiving end of 15 loser points (most in Central), and there are no shutouts come playoff time. Chicago will need to strike fast and play sound defense if they have any chance to win this year. They have allowed 199 goals this season (11th overall). They need to be better.

The thing about the Hawks is that as a team they’re very versatile. They can play a rough tight checking game against the Blues or Bruins like last years SCF. Or they can run n gun with anyone and win games beating opponents at their own game. The West is full of complete teams but the Hawks have a leg up on all. Someone will need to beat them outright. They won’t beat themselves. Odds are it’s either SJ or STL playing Chi in WCF. LA is the dark horse. Playing very good hockey now. They could run right through the west at will if the put it together.
