There is really only one spot up for grabs in the Western Conference; the final wild card. The Coyotes currently hold that spot, but many teams are close behind.

Safe Teams: St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks

Almost Safe Teams: Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Colorado Avalanche

Out of Contention: Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, Nashville Predators

 On The Bubble

Phoenix Coyotes

Sitting quite uncomfortably in that last wild card spot, the Coyotes have a slim 2 point lead, with one less game in hand from the Stars. Their roster doesn’t overwhelm you, but they have found ways to win (similar to the Toronto Maple Leafs) in many different ways.

Dallas Stars

They lost their playoff spot to the Coyotes last week, but they have a game in hand. The Stars have lost two in a row and need to win fast. Maybe once the team recovers from the shock of the Rich Peverley incident they will be able to focus better.

Vancouver Canucks

Although we all know the Canucks season fell off a cliff starting in January of this year, there is still a slight hope that they can make the playoffs. Sitting three points back, but with three less games in hand, from Phoenix, the team still has some skill and leadership to make a late push.

Winnipeg Jets

It is a longshot, but the Jets are still only 4 points back from the Yotes, though they have played 2 more games. Ever since Paul Maurice started to give the team new life, fans are now getting optimism that the team has a chance of making the playoffs for the first time since relocating.

How many of the ‘on the bubble teams’ can make the playoffs? I take Toronto and Detroit to get in for sure, but the rest of them, I don’t know.

I think that the Leafs, Flyers, Rangers, Red Wings, and Stars will ultimately make the playoffs.
