Quick Shifts: Women’s Hockey, Pacioretty, Jersey Watch

Today, Women’s hockey took center stage at the Olmypics, with Sweden taking on Japan and host Russia up against Germany. Sweden just edged by Japan with a 1-0 win. Russia won by a more commanding score of 4-1. With only two teams coming out of Group B, Russia and Sweden just made themselves the favorites to qualify for the elimination rounds.

There was a moment of panic last night when Max Pacioretty crashed into the Carolina Hurricanes net and immediately starting clutching his arm in pain. The US Olympian was only eight minutes into his last game before leaving for Sochi and his night was finished. The question on everyone’s mind was whether Pacioretty would be good to go to Sochi, and if not, who would be his replacement (Bobby Ryan and Kyle Okposo topped Puck Daddy’s list). All the panic proved to be for naught though, as it was soon reported that Pacioretty was taken out for precautionary reasons and that he still intended to participate for Team USA.

It’s Christmas Morning all over again for hockey jersey fans! Icethetics, a must read for any NHL uniform fan, just posted the first edition of their annual Jersey Watch post. Jersey Watch lists all of the rumored uniform changes for the next NHL season. For the first edition, a lot of it is speculation based off the Reebok equipment catalog that retailers get, as well as reports from beat writers. As we get closer to the offseason, the rumors become more concrete and Icethetics gets a better idea of who is actually making uniform changes. The last phase are reports of leaks and confirmed unveiling dates.

That will do it for today’s edition of Quick Shifts! It was a light day for hockey action, with the NHLers on their way to Sochi, we only had two Women’s games to keep us occupied. Look for more Olympic news throughout the day, as well as NHL related articles as well!
