Yesterday the news came out that Zdeno Chara will be participating in the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Why is this a big deal? The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 11:00 am (est), which means that Chara had to miss not only yesterday’s Bruins game against the St. Louis Blues, but also their game on Saturday the 8th against the Ottawa Senators. Chara had this to say about the opportunity…

I was pleased and I was very excited and happy. Overwhelmed I would say, but first I was for sure a skeptic about it. Then I was very glad that it worked out.

Chara had been asked a few months ago if he would do the honor of carrying the Slovakian flag during the opening ceremonies, but being the captain that he is, he was torn between his NHL team and his country. So what did he do? He turned to his teammates to make sure they would support his decision…

I spoke to a few guys before I even asked management, so I wanted to make sure that they were going to be OK with that; the team, the management, the organization is going to be OK with that. Before I even made the decision for myself I asked them. And then I made the decision.

So if you happen to catch the opening ceremonies, whether it is live at 11 AM, or later tonight when NBC will run the tape on prime time television, be on the lookout for Chara – even though that won’t be a tough task.
