The majority of the hockey world is moving into Olympic mode (unless your Ed Snider, more on that later)! Here are today’s Quick Shifts.
The Steven Stamkos / Martin St. Louis Team Canada roster swap wasn’t the only one to make headlines yesterday. Team Sweden announced that Henrik Sedin would also not be able to make the trip due to a rib injury. Therefore, Marcus Johansson of the Washington Capitals will take Henrik’s place.
Over at Union and Blue, Julia Lawrence compared the goaltending stats for Team Russia’s goaltenders, Semyon Varlamov and Sergei Bobrovsky, as well as Team USA’s Jimmy Howard. All three had had their ups and downs this season and could play an important role between the pipes for their respective teams.
A penalty shot is a rare occurrence in hockey. An even more rare occurrence is the same player getting two of them. Well that is exactly what happened to Max Pacioretty in a two minute time-span during last night’s Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks game. Pacioretty missed both shots, but still ended the night with a hat trick.
Ed Snider is not a fan of the Olympics. That’s mostly because Ed Snider likes making money. A three week Olympic break means the arena in Philly is dark for an extended period. The hatred for the games is magnified because several Flyers were snubbed from making Olympic rosters (plenty of former Flyers made it though!). What I find most surprising is that Snider said the Olympics are “not good for the fans.” Come on Ed, sure putting an exciting NHL season on pause is a bit tough, but every hockey fan is going to be glued to these games, watching the best players in the world represent their respective countries. Even non hockey fans are buzzing about Olympic hockey. Your not getting a cut of the pie and that has you pissed off. Don’t try to pass this off as “bad for the fans”, all is happy here.
Before we end this edition of Quick Shifts, just want to throw in a quick shameless plug for a quick slideshow post we ran yesterday, the Top 5 NHL Uniforms In Need of A Rebrand. The response to the article has been amazing, with most agreeing with the list, but also suggesting I had included the Penguins and the Calgary Flames. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you can do so here.
