Poll: Is Thomas Vanek Worth the Trade Risk?

With the news that Thomas Vanek has declined a substantial contract offer from the New York Islanders, trade speculation is starting to heat up. Vanek is in the final year of his 7 year, $50 million contract and will hit the free agent market this Summer. It is starting to appear that Vanek, who was acquired by the Isles from Buffalo in exchange for Matt Moulson, a 2014 first round pick, and a 2015 second rounder, will prove to be an expensive rental for the Islanders.

With today’s news of Vanek being on the trade market / testing free agency in the off season, I am sure every team’s fans are imagining how Thomas Vanek could fit into their lineup. He is a 20+ goal scorer in every season he has played and one of those essential puzzle pieces that could take your team to the next level.

But then there are the mixed messages about being traded to Buffalo. Vanek made it sound as if he was resigned to his fate of eventually being traded. He also voiced that he was not interested in being a part of the rebuild in Buffalo. Now he wants out of New York, despite earlier remarks that he was happy with the situation there.

Signing Vanek during free agency will be the low risk option, but what about teams kicking the trade tires now? The Islanders already got burned. Would you feel comfortable with your team taking the plunge as well? There are several teams that are on the playoff bubble who could benefit from having Thomas Vanek in their lineup, but is he worth the rental price?

Let us know how you feel in the poll below!
