Ironically, the fans who attended this years’ Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Michigan, are the main reason as to why Guinness will not record the tilt between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings as the most fans to attend a sporting event.

The NHL and Guinness agreed beforehand that the amount of tickets scanned at the event would determine the attendance as well as if a new record would be set that day.

The sad part is, due to the weather, many fans were still arriving to the event in the second period. At that point, ticket takers had already stopped scanning tickets.

The 2014 Winter Classic sold 105,491 tickets, however won’t take the record due to the counting issue.

The current record was a NCAA game between Michigan and Michigan State with an attendance 104,173 fans.
