Hockey Day Minnesota 2014 is a celebration of all things hockey in the State of Minnesota. The eighth annual event will be taking place in Elk River, MN. on January 18,2014. From the Minnesota Wild, to the Minnesota Golden Gophers, to high school hockey and youth hockey, Hockey Day Minnesota is a chance for all the residents of the state to participate in an event to honor a game they all love to watch and play. This event showcases the passion Minnesotans have for the game of hockey.
This year the event is getting a boost. For the first time in the 8 year history, Hockey Day Minnesota will be aired on national television via Fox Sports 2. Fox Sports 2 will be offering viewers over 16 hours of coverage culminating with the NHL game to be played between the Minnesota Wild and the Dallas Stars. As hockey fans, this is a very cool thing. The opportunity Fox Sports is bringing to viewers nationwide is something that should be embraced. We know that hockey is a niche sport and, in many people’s eyes, ranks 4th out of the big four sports, so anything that can be done to promote its popularity should be done. When the game of hockey played at all levels can be broadcast to millions it enhances the opportunity to make someone a fan of the game.
The National Hockey League does a great job on a global level promoting the game, especially with the Winter Classic. Hockey Day Minnesota has been just a regional event up until now. Fox Sports making this event available to more people across the United States extends the work being done by the NHL. It allows for exposure. At the end of the day, exposure is what is going to grow the game. The more chances people have to witness the speed and beauty of hockey, the more people can be drawn to the game.
Fox Sports along with Hockey Day Minnesota should be commended for further promoting hockey. Hopefully, more markets across the league take in this event and gives them ideas on promoting hockey in their area.
