The San Jose Sharks are going to be without one their star forwards for the next little while. The Sharks announced today that Logan Couture will be going under the knife due to an upper body injury. Various reports are saying that it will be hand surgery.
In a statement issued by General Manager Doug Wilson:
For the past several weeks, Logan has been dealing and playing with an upper body injury,” said general manager Doug Wilson in a statement. “Despite his efforts to play through it, the injury has not responded as we had hoped and Logan has made the decision to undergo a surgical procedure to repair the problem.
While the timing of the procedure is not ideal, Logan feels it is in his and the team’s best interest to get the problem rectified now. Logan will undergo surgery on Wednesday and we will have a better update on the recovery time following the procedure.
The timing of this announcement couldn’t be worse for Couture as Team Canada is set to announce their Olympic roster for the 2014 Winter Olympics. It is not known if this will eliminate Couture from making the team or not, but with the depth that Team Canada has to choose from you would think that they would turn to someone else to fill the spot.
On the season, Couture has 14 goals and 20 assists. He has just recently started to come around. He is currently riding a five game point streak in which he has posted 4 goals and 1 assist.
This injury adds another blow to the San Jose Sharks roster as they are already without star rookie Tomas Hertl. The Sharks are currently in second place in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski and Patrick Marleau are now going to have to shoulder more of the burden on the offensive end of the ice in order to keep the Sharks contenders.
