Dion Phaneuf And Toronto Maple Leafs Agree On Seven Year Deal

Dion Phaneuf and the Toronto Maple Leafs have come to terms on a new contract for the veteran defenseman.  The deal will keep the defenseman in Toronto through the

2020-2021 season, and will net the defenseman 49 million dollars.

It was four years ago that the Toronto Maple Leafs traded to bring Phaneuf to Toronto.  Since coming East he has only missed 18 games.  16 due to an injury and two to a suspension this year.

Phaneuf has played in 600 NHL games and has scored 106 goals and 340 points.

Phaneuf is in the top ten of defenseman in goals per game since joining the league in 2005-2006.  The 28 year old captain is happy to be locked up long term by the Maple Leafs.

“This is a very proud day for me and my family, I’m very honoured to be the captain of this historic franchise and to maintain the opportunity to play and represent the Toronto Maple Leafs for many years to come.” – Dion Phaneuf

The deal also includes a limited no movement clause, Phaneuf will have to submit a list of teams to the Maple Leafs that he will not be traded to during the course of the contract.

Phaneuf and the Toronto Maple Leafs are in Michigan preparing to faceoff against the Detroit Red Wings in the Annual Winter Classic game scheduled to take place tomorrow at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor Michigan.  Once the snow settles that will be the largest outdoor professional game in North America.
