QUICK SHIFTS: December 21st

In last night’s game between the Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes, Alex Ovechkin reached a milestone in his career. He scored his 400th career goal while defeating the Hurricanes in Raleigh. The goal was an empty net goal as he defeated the Canes defenseman. Katie Carrera from the Washington Post tells us that he is the sixth fastest player to reach 400 goals, behind stars like Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

Washington Capitals’ forward and tough guy Tom Wilson let out a sigh of relief as he beat the suspension from Brenden Shanahan. The Department of Player Safety and Shanahan put out their explanatory video about why Wilson wasn’t suspended. He covers every aspect of the play, and shows why Wilson was not penalized further than his in-game penalties. Greg Wyshynski posted the video of the hit and the explanation on Yahoo Sports.

Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Danny Dekeyser will return to the lineup tonight in a Winter Classic preview against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Center. Dekeyser has missed 15 games with a separated shoulder and is very excited to suit up again. Joe Yerdon, an NHL.com correspondent,  has a little bit about the game and Dekeyser’s return.
