Underdog of the Week: Michael Raffl

This week’s Underdog of the Week comes to us from the Philadelphia Flyers. Michael Raffl is a 25-year old left wing for the Flyers, and is in his first NHL season. He has put up some good stats in this past week. Let’s take a look at our Underdog of the Week.

Michael Raffl has played 21 NHL games this season. His first NHL season, and he is showing some progress. So far this year, he has grabbed two goals and six assists. The reason he is Underdog of the Week this week is because in his past four games, starting last Monday, he recorded six of his eight points. His first big night was Monday, when the Flyers battled the Ottawa Senators in Ottawa. He had one goal and one assist, almost 15 minutes of ice time, and only recorded one shot. His second game was Wednesday in Chicago. He couldn’t contribute any points to this game. The next night, where they hosted the Montreal Canadiens, he scored his second NHL goal, as they went on to defeat the Habs 2-1. Raffl had been put on the first line for this game with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek.

Despite losing to the Washington Capitals in a shootout Sunday night, Raffl had recorded three more assists. He was named the second star of the game for two games straight. The Villach, Austria native has been a big help, although the Flyers have lost five of their last seven games. Raffl is a great player to have on the Flyers, because he is the type of player who would rather give you the puck to score than take his own shot. In every game this week, with the exception of the Montreal game, he has only recorded one shot a game. He took three shots during the Montreal game.

This week’s Underdog of the Week still has a lot of time to work on his scoring, but he is exactly what the Flyers need in their arsenal of players. He will be a great playmaker for the team and hopefully help them win a lot more games.
