Katrina’s Daily Rant: Dion Phaneuf on the Trade Block?

I posed this question on our facebook page yesterday: If the Toronto Maple Leafs do well without Dion Phaneuf during his suspension, will this mean he is on the trade block? One of the answers I got was that this was a stupid question because the suspension is only 2 games. Here is the thing with Phaneuf though, his absence from the line up will have a huge impact on the Leafs. Phaneuf plays upwards of 30 minutes a game and is definitely the Leafs number one defenceman in terms of ice time but I question whether he is number 1 in talent.

Before you get your panties in a twist I am not saying that Phaneuf wasn’t talented at one point in his career. I can’t speak to that because I didn’t watch him when he was in Calgary. Right now Phaneuf leaves much to be desired, at least in my opinion. Dion seems to have lost his edge and even though he’s on the ice for a half an hour he only manages one or two good plays a game.

The two games that Phaneuf will miss are the games against the Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues. These teams are sitting at 4th and 7th in the league respectively. These are two amazing teams that the Leafs would have a tough time beating with Phaneuf let alone with him out of the line-up. If the Leafs can beat these teams without Dion it would more than prove they don’t need him. The team puts a lot on Phaneuf and I personally don’t think we need to. I think if Morgan Rielly gets put in for Mark Fraser the Leafs will have no problem beating these two teams especially with the return of Joffrey Lupul.

If the Leafs can move Phaneuf it would be a way better move than Jake Gardiner. You have veteran defense in John-Michael Liles, you don’t need Dion Phaneuf to guide these young defenseman. Gardiner has amazing potential and to lose him without gaining the full benefit of him fully realizing it would be a huge mistake.

What do you think? Will the Leafs win tonight without Phaneuf? If they do does that mean they can afford to trade him? What could they get for him? Share your thoughts in the comment box below, on twitter, or on facebook!

You have no clue what your talking about! 2 games is meaningless and without phaneuf for a full season would mean finishing close to last place! Your hatred of phanuef clouds any judgment you may have! As far as talent goes phaneuf is the tops by a mile on the leafs! The rest of the leafs d has what 2 goals! Stop posting articles like this all they do is embarrass you!

    • Katrina Capp

Stop just stop, you are free to state your opinion but don’t insult mine. If the Leafs win these next two games against 2 of the top teams in the it proves they will do fine without Phaneuf.

    • scotzi

All it proves is your a complete fool! If you think winning two games means any thing in the grand scheme of things you don’t have any business writing about sports or anything else for that matter! Get your head out of your butt, they won games without lupul, bozak, and Bolland, should we get rid of them as well! Your argument is insane! Stop writing about hockey cause you obviously know nothing about the game!

Now you are just becoming a troll. Don’t comment until you are ready to have an intelligent conversation like a grown up.

  • James Allen

Your just too stupid to have an intelligent conversation with! Your the one who needs to grow up and realize you don’t know anything about hockey!

    • Katrina Capp

Now you are just being mean. If you think I’m so stupid why waste your time reading my articles. Just go away, we don’t need readers like you.

  • James Allen

From what I can see you need all the readers you can get! Besides someone needs to set you straight cause you just don’t know anything!

As far as I’m concerned, the Leafs need to trade Phaneuf while he may still be worth something. He’s been proven to be an over paid pylon and to get rid of him may mean Toronto may be able to rebuild the defence, now that offense has been taken care of. James Allen you clearly don’t know anything about the Leafs If you think Dion is a decent player. Why do you think people find it laughable when people say Dion is a good defenceman. Looking at his stats you would think he’s any good but the fact is his quality of play is poor. Stats mean nothing. Watch him play over 10 games and he will have made 7 good plays and about 30 terrible decisions. It’s not science, it’s hockey. Trade him while there is decent pickings of defenceman.

    • Katrina Capp

Thank you! I don’t know how much we will get for him now since he scored on his own net twice last night (luckily the second one didn’t count).

    • scotzi

You are right. Trade Phaneuf while you can get something for him. Yeah, he is a strong defenceman, sometimes puts up a good game, but he is way overpaid and the Leafs cant afford to pay him another big maybe bigger contract, especially now since they signed Clarkson(another mistake if you want)
