Katrina’s Daily Rant: Toronto Maple Leafs Shots on Goal

So this morning I’m listening to Sportsnet 590 the Fan, I don’t usually do this but my dad couldn’t watch last night’s Toronto Maple Leafs game so he wanted to listen. All is well and good until they start talking about the Leafs. They were claiming that because the Leafs were out shot 50-24 and that this was becoming a pattern and because of that the Leafs won’t make the playoffs this year. It was at this point that we turned off the radio and looked for the Coach’s Corner we missed last week.

I find it completely ridiculous that you can base a team’s success on one stat. The shots on goal stat doesn’t mean anything when you look at it by itself. They never said anything about puck possession or really any other stat but made the call that if the Leafs didn’t change they wouldn’t make the playoffs. Am I the only one that thinks they were completely out of line?

I had a hard time finding puck possession stats so if anyone can find those post them in the comment box but really shots at this point don’t matter. If you take a shot at the net and its a horrible shot, its still a shot. Though you are more likely to score when you have a lot of shots it really doesn’t matter. The only shots that matter are the ones that go to the back of the net, those are the ones that win games. The bottom line is the Leafs won. It’s not the quantity of shots it’s the quality. If you are going to make a claim as bold as the Leafs aren’t going to make the playoffs you have to look at more than the shots.

What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comment box below, on facebook, or on twitter.

Shots on goal and shots directed at the net are a great indication of how a team is playing! As for puck possession the Leafs are one of the worst teams for puck possession!

    • Katrina Capp

Where did you find this puck possession stat? The point of the article is that you can’t base the teams performance on one stat.

  • James Allen

First it’s two stats! Any team that continues to get outshot the way the leafs do is not playing very well! All you have to do is watch the games to see that! Puck possession is easy to find in the box scores. They continue to run around in their own zone and don’t play physical in front of their own net!

    • Katrina Capp

Puck possession is not in the box score I’ve checked multiple times. There last 4 losses were pretty close 2 of them got us a point. Also if you look at the box score you will see that we beat the Stars in takeaways and blocked shots. Also WE WON THE GAME!

  • James Allen

They have 5 loses in their last 6 games! What stats would like to base their performance on?

  • James Allen

Are you really trying to tell me the leafs have played well in the last 6 games! Seriously have you even watched the games. Of course the leafs had more blocked shots than Dallas, Dallas directed 90 pucks towards the leafs goal! The leafs had more takeaways cause Dallas had the puck all game! You have some learning to do about hockey!

    • Katrina Capp

How dare you say I don’t know about hockey! If you don’t like what I have to say don’t read my articles.

  • James Allen

I read them to get a good laugh!

You still don’t have to insult me in the comment section. Didn’t your mother ever tell you if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.

  • James Allen

Your the one posting stuff, if you can’t take criticism then you shouldn’t be posting stuff! I don’t agree with your post and I will comment on stuff I disagree/agree with whether you agree or not!

    • Katrina Capp

I couldn’t care less if you agree or disagree with me. It’s when you start to say I don’t know hockey that I have a problem.

  • James Allen

By your comments you prove that you don’t know hockey! Your view on fighting your views on certain players and now this all points to you not knowing the game very well!
