So this morning I’m listening to Sportsnet 590 the Fan, I don’t usually do this but my dad couldn’t watch last night’s Toronto Maple Leafs game so he wanted to listen. All is well and good until they start talking about the Leafs. They were claiming that because the Leafs were out shot 50-24 and that this was becoming a pattern and because of that the Leafs won’t make the playoffs this year. It was at this point that we turned off the radio and looked for the Coach’s Corner we missed last week.
I find it completely ridiculous that you can base a team’s success on one stat. The shots on goal stat doesn’t mean anything when you look at it by itself. They never said anything about puck possession or really any other stat but made the call that if the Leafs didn’t change they wouldn’t make the playoffs. Am I the only one that thinks they were completely out of line?
I had a hard time finding puck possession stats so if anyone can find those post them in the comment box but really shots at this point don’t matter. If you take a shot at the net and its a horrible shot, its still a shot. Though you are more likely to score when you have a lot of shots it really doesn’t matter. The only shots that matter are the ones that go to the back of the net, those are the ones that win games. The bottom line is the Leafs won. It’s not the quantity of shots it’s the quality. If you are going to make a claim as bold as the Leafs aren’t going to make the playoffs you have to look at more than the shots.
