There has been a lot of talk surrounding the possible trade of Jake Gardiner from the Toronto Maple Leafs. I think this would be the worst trade in the history of the Leafs including the one that sent away the draft picks that would be Tyler Seguin and Dougie Hamilton for Phil Kessel. The reasoning some of the insiders have for the trade is that Jake isn’t meshing well with Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. I think Carlyle is mishandling Gardiner. Jake has amazing hockey sense and if you let him go amazing things happen.
Take this goal from March 15, 2012. The Leafs were taking on the Tampa Bay Lightning and this happened.
Skills like that just don’t disappear. I’ve seen Jake play in person and his hockey sense is something that is just amazing to watch. Jake can get to where he was again he just needs the space to be who he is. Jake is only 23, he is developing which can account for his inconsistency. This also means that he will likely get even better with age. At this point it is way too soon to decide on Jake’s future with the Leafs but I’m definitely leaning towards it being a good idea that he stays.
