Katrina’s Daily Rant: Team Canada Goalie Possibilities

I did a lot of thinking about what to talk about for today’s rant. Me and my dad were talking this week-end about the Olympics and someone asked us who we thought would make the team this year that wasn’t around last time. We then started talking about the Team Canada Goalie possibilities. There were 5 goalies invited to Team Canada Orientation Camp: Corey Crawford, Braden Holtby, Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, and Mike Smith.  But I think there are some other players that are good enough to be considered.

Let’s take a look at the stats:

Corey Crawford:

Team: Chicago Blackhawks

Games Played: 22 Save Percentage: .908 Goals Against Average: 2.50

Braden Holtby:

Team: Washington Capitals

Games Played: 19 Save Percentage: .925 Goals Against Average: 2.59

Roberto Luongo:

Team: Vancouver Canucks

Games Played: 21 Save Percentage: .914 Goals Against Average: 2.30

Carey Price:

Team: Montreal Canadiens

Games Played: 19 Save Percentage: .935 Goals Against Average: 2.05

Mike Smith:

Team: Phoenix Coyotes

Games Played: 21 Save Percentage: .912 Goals Against Average:3.02

If we are going by stats all these goalies seem pretty well equal. I still think there are better candidates out there. In my opinion the best decision for a starter would be Corey Crawford. He is playing on the number one team in the league which also happens to be the reigning Stanley Cup Champions. As for stats Carey Price is also  good candidate. He has the best goals against average of all the candidates and the best save percentage but I also think there are some other players that Steve Yzerman and his crew should be looking at. The two I feel strongly about are Jonathan Bernier and Ben Scrivens.

Jonathan Bernier:

Team: Toronto Maple Leafs

Games Played: 15 Save Percentage: .934 Goals Against Average: 2.19

Ben Scrivens:

Team: Los Angeles Kings

Games Played: 11 Save Percentage: .946 Goals Against Average: 1.37

If you take a look at these numbers they are similar if not better than those invited to camp. Though they haven’t played as many games as the other candidates their numbers are  still impressive especially when you take into consideration that Scrivens has the most shutouts in the league right now. The reason these two weren’t considered before hand and invited to camp is because they were back up goalies. With the trade to the Leafs Bernier has been given the chance to shine and so has Scrivens with Jonathan Quick‘s injury.

What do you think? Who do you think will be Team Canada’s goalie? Is there someone else that should be considered? Share your thoughts in the comment box below, on facebook, or on twitter!
