Hockey is struggling in the City of Brotherly Love, and with that usually come trade rumors. Now it’s Luke Schenn. With his slow start to the season and current pace to finish the year a minus-47, it’s no wonder the blueliner’s name has popped up with any trade rumors involving the Philadelphia Flyers.
On Sunday Schenn was a healthy scratch as Hal Gill was given the start in place of the struggling defender. Who cares about the trade rumors, it must be a hard hit to the ego to be benched for a slower, older option any day of the week.
According to Eklund of Hockeybuzz.com, apparently the Dallas Stars and another Western Conference club are interested in Schenn’s services. It’s the same story as was the last time Schenn wasn’t playing well and was on the trading block in Toronto. At some point, the “change of scenery,” or “player doesn’t fit the system” excuses won’t fly. Perhaps Luke Schenn isn’t the player scouts thought he would be.
The Flyers already lost James van Riemsdyk in acquiring Schenn. Perhaps they just want to cut ties while there are still teams in need of a big, bruising defenseman Luke Schenn is hoped to be; key word – hoped. But perhaps that ship has sailed.
Only time will tell. Schenn may be just the first of a fire sale. The Flyers clearly hate losing, so what better way to right the ship then unload all the underperforming weight? The rumors will heat up and become even more outlandish. For now it’s just a few teams here and there with a bit of interest. If you ask me, it’s usually the teams no one thinks are in the running that end up making a move.
What do you think? Should the Flyers part ways with the struggling defender? Is Luke Scheen’s potential still hiding somewhere? Leave your thoughts below!
