Capitals Trade Rumor: Martin Erat

It’s being reported by The Score that the Capitals need a veteran defenseman, and they are willing to trade Martin Erat to get one.  Currently the Caps are 2oth in the league in GA (38), and they need help.

Erat hasn’t been with the Caps for very long. He came to Washington via the Nashville Predators at the trade deadline last year. That is the trade that sent Flip Forsberg to the Preds.  So far Erat has been a letdown. This season he has only put the puck on net seven times, and has 5 points. All points are assists, and three came in one game.

Erat has two years left on his contract at a cap hit of $4, 500, 00 Million a year. The 32-year-old will most likely be looking for one more pay-day after the 2014-2015 season, but with production down finding a team looking to add a player like that may be hard to do. To make things harder yet the Caps want a veteran defenseman; for a trade to go down I think the Capitals will need to sweeten the deal.

Martin Erat’s Career NHL Numbers (regular season)

  • Games Played: 745
  • Goals: 164
  • Assist:325
  • Points:489

*In 13 years in the NHL Erat has only broken the 20 goal mark three times. Looking at his stats it is clear that Erat is more of a set up player; breaking the 40 point mark eight times.
