Ryan Garbutt of the Dallas Stars has been offered an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety for his hit on Dustin Penner in last night’s game against the Anaheim Ducks. There was no penalty on the play and Penner is still under evaluation but he did have full mobility and was able to under his own power.
An in-person hearing allows for a suspension of 5 games or more but the suspension could also be less. The charge as of now is charging and illegal check to the head but that is subject to change following the hearing.
In my opinion there is no way to predict how many games he will get. Even if you look at similar incidents in the past it won’t matter because the NHL is really starting to crack down on head shots. I also think there should have been a charging penalty on the play because he went straight for Penner out of the box. What do you think? How many games would you give Garbutt?
