The NHL has announced the three stars of this past week, Jonas Gustavsson of the Detroit Red Wings earned the first star, while Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins earned the second star, and Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks earned the third star of the week.
Jonas Gustavsson stepped into duty in-between the pipes in Detroit when starter, Jimmy Howard was out with a sore arm after being hit with the puck during a game against the Philadelphia Flyers. Gustavsson came in and won all three of his starts, posting a goals against average of 1.67, and a save percentage of .953%. Gustavsson came in on short notice to play against the Bruins, and the Red Wings skated to a 3-2 win in Boston. He then stopped 36 of 37 shots against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and finished his run in net with a 4-2 win over the previously unbeaten Colorado Avalanche, earning Monster the first star of the NHL this week.
Sidney Crosby stretched his point streak to eight games to start the season, making it the best start of his career. Crosby started the week assisting on all three goals in a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Crosby then grabbed a goal and an assist while the Penguins were visiting the Philadelphia Flyers. The Penguins then took on the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday when Crosby earned a goal and two assists in the contest. Crosby has proven to be consistently good for the Penguins, night in and night out, once again. Crosby’s two goals and six assists earned him the NHL’s second star of the week.
Patrick Marleau continued his torrid start by stretching his point streak to start the season at eight games as well. Marleau put up a goal and two assists in the Sharks victory in St. Louis this past week. He then scored a single goal in the Sharks lone loss of the season when they were beaten by the Dallas Stars in overtime. Marleau added a goal and an assist against the Calgary Flames to give him a total of three goals and three assists this week. Scoring six points in three games was good enough to earn Marleau the third star of the week.
