J.A.'s Early Season 2014 NHL Draft Rankings

The 2014 NHL Draft is shaping up to be quite a spectactular one. It will likely rival 2003’s star-studded draft that featured the likes of Eric Staal, Thomas Vanek, Zach Parise, Dion Phaneuf, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Loui Eriksson, Shea Weber, Patrice Bergeron, and many more. The upcoming draft will also be well-represent by many different leagues. The OHL will have its fair share of top prospects, the QMJHL and WHL will feature many first rounders, Swedish leagues will be in the mix, as well as the US National Development Program. Here is my early-season ranking of the top 30 prospects for the 2014 NHL Draft:

  1. Aaron Ekblad, D, Barrie Colts (OHL)- Victor Hedman, Ryan Murray, and Seth Jones were defencemen who were passed over the first pick the past few years, but Ekblad may break that trend. He was the second player to qualify for the “John Tavares Rule” (after John Tavares, of course) to play in the OHL when he was only 16.
  2. William Nylander Altelius, F, Rogle BK (HockeyAllsvenskan)- The Canadian-born Swede is the son of former NHLer Michael is a natural scorer. He led Team Sweden to win the World U-17 World Hockey Championships in 2013.
  3. Sam Reinhart, C, Kootenay Ice (WHL)- The youngest of the Reinhart brothers is considered by many to be the frontrunner to be drafted first overall in the draft. He has already represented Canada multiple times.
  4. Jake Virtanen, RW, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)- “The Snake” has huge skill and quickness. Without a doubt, he will be a very good one-on-one player in the NHL.
  5. Jakub Vrana, LW, Linkoping (SHL)- He is yet another skilled offensive winger in this draft, so it may tough for either him or another winger to keep his stock high. However, Vrana is still one of the best in the draft,
  6. Leon Draisaitl, LW, Prince Albert Raiders (WHL)- Not only does he have great size and power, but he can also skate. He is a perfect NHL-type player.
  7. Ivan Barbashev, C, Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)- He is off to a great start to the 2013-14 season, and will likely be the highest-drafted prospect from the “Q”.
  8. Nick Ritchie, LW, Peterborough Petes (OHL)- His playing type is sort of similar to Draisaitl in a way that he is both physical and quick.
  9. Kasperi Kapanen, RW, KalPa (SM Liiga)- Sami’s kid is playing professionally in Finland and truly has all the elements to play on every corner of the ice.
  10. Joshua Ho-Sang, RW, Windsor Spitfires (OHL)- Not only does he have tremendous scoring potential, but the “Snipefire” also has good size.
  11. Roland McKeown, D, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)
  12. Spencer Watson, LW, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)
  13. Anton Karlsson, RW, Linkopings (SHL)
  14. Sam Bennett, LW, Kingston Frontenacs (OHL)
  15. Haydn Fleury, D, Red Deer Rebels (WHL)
  16. Nick Schmaltz, C, Green Bay Gamblers (USHL)
  17. Adrian Kempe, LW, Modo Jr. (SWE JR)
  18. Michael Dal Colle, LW, Oshawa Generals (OHL)
  19. Blake Clarke, LW, North Bay Battalion (OHL)
  20. Nikolai Goldobin, F, Sarnia Sting (OHL)
  21. Jared McCann, F, Soo Greyhounds (OHL)
  22. Jacob Pastrnak, F, Sodertalje (SHL)
  23. Chase De Leo, C, Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
  24. Thatcher Demko, G, Boston College (NCAA)
  25. Matt Mistele, C, Plymouth Whalers (OHL)
  26. Josh Thrower, D, Calgary Hitmen (WHL)

  28. Robby Fabbri, C, Guelph Storm (OHL)
  29. Anthony De Angelo, D, Sarnia Sting (OHL)
  30. Alex Nedeljkovic, G, Plymouth Whalers (OHL)
