The NHL has released the three stars of the first week of the season. Firt star went to Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, the second star to Lars Eller of the Montreal Canadiens, and the third star to Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Alex Ovechkin has scored four goals and three assists in the first three games of the season, proving once again that last year was no fluke, and Ovi is back at the top of his game. 3 of his goals have come on the powerplay, and two of his assists as well, as the Capitals powerlay has proven to be quite the force once again this season. Ovechkin led the NHL in opening week with four goals, six points, three powerplay goals, five powerplay points, and twenty-four shots on goal.
Lars Eller came out swinging in the first game of the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Eller had a goal and an assist in the first period, and added a shorthanded goal in the third period in a spoiled attempt of a comeback for the Canadiens. Eller recorded another goal and an assist against the Flyers in the Canadiens victory on Saturday. Eller has totaled five points in two games, and has been a part of five of the Canadiens seven goals thus far.
Marc-Andre Fleury came into the season having to prove himself after another bitter collapse in the playoffs last season. So far, he’s done all that he’s had to, and the work load got bigger once Tomas Vokoun went down. Fluery is 2-0 and has stopped 47-48 shots this season. He shut out the New Jersey Devils on opening night, and surrendered only one goal to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. He holds a .979% and a goals against average of 0.50.
