There are a few things I came across today that I wanted to share with you all. Welcome to The Neutral Zone.
A big relief comes to the Edmonton Oilers today when word came out the Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is expected to return Monday. This is the game that they host Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. The recovery from his shoulder surgery, which took place April 23, was a lot quicker than expected, which is a huge relief for the team. NHL.com covered it here.
The San Jose Sharks defeated the Vancouver Canucks Thursday night by a score of 4-1. The biggest news from the game was the tie-breaking goal. San Jose’s Justin Braun scored his first goal in over 19 months to break this tie, which lead to their victory. They also failed to convert on seven powerplays, only scoring full strength. The Hockey News has the full story of the game.
Florida Panthers struck gold with their number 2 pick Aleksander Barkov in their season debut. Barkov is the youngest goal-scorer in an NHL game (18 years, 31 days) since January 1944 when Ted Kennedy scored at the age of 18 years, 27 days. It was a big welcome to the NHL, and it helped the Panthers beat the Dallas Stars 4-2. Check out the story on USA Today.
If you haven’t heard, Ilya Bryzgalov, most famous for his 24/7 Rangers/Flyers HBO Series “performance”, agreed to a tryout with the ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers. There is no doubt that this NHL goaltender will be signed by the team, but I think they just want him to learn a few science lessons. CBS Sports covered this, and you can find the whole story if you follow this link.
These are just a few things I found when looking around for the top news around the NHL. Check n tomorrow for another edition of The Neutral Zone. Let us know what you think about these topics.
