It’s that time of year, the time when NHL teams start sending their young prospects to the AHL. The Carolina Hurricanes are no different. In a report found on NBCSports.com; the Canes have sent Ryan Murphy to Charlotte.
CAR’s Ryan Murphy, on other hand, sent to Charlotte today but highly likely to be in Canes’ opening-night lineup. Roster manipulation. (Bob McKenzie)
If what Mckenzie said is true, what was the point in sending Murphy down? Well, cap problems of course. Last year Murphy played in four games, and averaged 21 minutes a game.
Canes owner Peter Karmanos said Murphy move was cap-related. Would be back soon. (Chip Alexander)
If I was the 20-year-old defensemen I would not think twice about this.
Some information on Murphy
- Murphy was drafted 12th overall
- Murphy suffered a severe concussion on November 4, 2011
- September 18, 2012, Murphy was named Captain of the Kitchener Rangers.
OHL Stat Line: 174 GO, 73 G, 129 A
Murphy could be a strong number 5 or 4 D-man for the Canes. But, time will tell.
Side Note: The NHL is all about money. It’s just sad that cap issues are to the point that teams need to shift players up and down just to sneak under the salary cap. Just using this as an example; how can the NHL expand when teams cannot afford to keep their talent up now? Sorry Bettman, but you have fixed nothing.
