I didn’t think I would say it but the Toronto Maple Leafs have finally caved. Cody Franson has been signed to the Leafs for 1 year at 2 million dollars. Franson finally agreeing to less money may have something to do with his play last year. Many experts are saying that if he plays as well this year he will get a lot more money next year.

If you are wondering why it takes so long to sign guys like Franson and Nazem Kadri let me enlighten you to my opinion. These guys are young, they play great in the final year of their contract and all of a sudden they believe they are invaluable to the team and ask for astronomical amounts of money. The truth is one good year doesn’t make you Sidney Crosby.

This is why Randy Carlyle gave Kadri the play time that he did. He didn’t want to blow up his ego. Unfortunately the Toronto media didn’t get the memo and with a couple of doting headlines and a kiss from Don Cherry Kadri’s head became a hot air balloon. A similar thing happened to Franson because of his play in the playoffs. You score that many goals in the playoffs and you are a god in Toronto.

Toronto is a really easy place to get caught up in your ego which is why we have so many overpaid players. Here’s hoping Dave Nonis stops the cycle and they start actually winning.
