Cody Franson Doesn't Want to be a Leaf

Though he has never formally said anything to suggest this, the current situation causes me to question whether Cody Franson  really wants to be a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. There are many factors that cause me to think the answer is no.

If you don’t already know the situation let me lay it out for you. Franson is currently a restricted free agent. The Leafs are offering Franson 2 years at 2.4 million but Franson is insistent on a one year deal. The Leafs are refusing to do a one year deal because there are too many contracts coming up including Dion Phaneuf, Jake Gardiner, and Mark Fraser. If Franson gets a one year contract he becomes an unrestricted free agent next season.

My understanding is that Franson no longer wants to be a Leaf. He knows why the Leafs will not give him one year and they are prepared to hold out for weeks or months unless an offer sheet comes along. I don’t think this is about the money, I think Franson wants out. If he gets an offer sheet the Leafs will either give in to his demands or let him go to another team. Either way Franson gets his way. If he gets the one year contract he will be able to test the free agency waters once the off-season rolls along.

I don’t blame Cody for not wanting to be a Leaf. Toronto is a tough place to play. The media is relentless and the fans are fickle. One day you’re a god and the next you are getting run out of  town by an angry mob. Also, I could be wrong and he could be after more money. He is a decent hockey player and maybe deserves a little more than whatever’s left of the salary cap.

What do you think? Is Cody Franson desperately trying to escape Toronto? Where do you think he would go instead? Is he just after more money? Tell us your thoughts in the comment box below, on twitter or on facebook!

Franson wants to get paid. 2.4 is laughably below what he’s worth. If I’m Franson, I wait until either the Leafs start clearing some cap space, or I demand a trade to a team that doesn’t spend its money foolishly on lesser players.

Im sure you’re not implying that 5mil on bozak is foolish. (Cue sarcastic tone) He’s worth every penny.

He actually got 4.2 per season (GET IT? 4.2? HIS NUMBER IS 42? HAHAHAHAPUKE), but still, what an awful contract.

Just thought I would share this tweet from James Mirtle: “Carlyle on Franson: “He doesn’t even become part of your thought process. It’s a cruel thing to say but you move on without people.””
