Preseason Update: Klesla Injury and Bissonnette Suspension

After being taken off the ice by a stretcher on Sunday night Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla has reportedly been diagnosed with whiplash and a concussion as a result of a hit by Jordan Nolan of the Los Angeles Kings. According to NHL.com Klesla was taken to hospital Sunday night and was released around 3:00 on Monday morning. They say he is resting comfortably at home and there is no timeline on a return.

There is a timeline on how long infamous 4th line grinder Paul Bissonnette will be out of the line up though. As a result of his game misconduct penalty for leaving the bench he has received an automatic 10 game suspension. Now, I realize he left the bench to start a fight which is a problem but I think there is a bigger problem when you have hearings that result in 2 game suspensions or less for illegal hits that cause serious injury, but leave the bench and cause no injury and you are automatically out for 10 games. This is just yet another commentary on how discipline in the NHL needs to change.

Jordan Nolan will recieve no supplementary discipline for his hit on Klesla. I have not seen the hit so I cannot comment on whether it was clean or not.
