St. Louis Blues training camp will begin today sans Alex Pietrangelo. He is still in contract negotiations with Blues management. The root of the problem according to Bob Mckenzie is that the Blues would like Pietrangelo for 8 years at 6 million but Alex wants 7 million if he is going to make that kind of commitment. Jeremy Rutherford from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch spoke with Blues GM Doug Armstrong who had this to say on the situation:
“I’ll take Alex’s perspective … he thinks he’s made us a hell of an offer. I disagree…. We think we’ve made him a hell of an offer…he’s disagreed. That’s where we’re at.”
Darren Dreger also had some interesting free agent news to report. Today Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin‘s agent will be meeting with Vancouver Canucks management to aggressively work on a contract extension.
Dreger also had some information on the Cody Franson stand-off with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs are holding firm at a 2 year deal while Franson is only looking for one year. The Leafs want to avoid a one year deal with Franson as they have a number of defencemen who only have a year left on their contracts, including: Dion Phaneuf, Jake Gardiner, Paul Ranger, and Mark Fraser. If Franson refuses the two year deal, Dreger has speculated that the Carolina Hurricane might send him an offer sheet especially after the loss of defenceman Joni Pitkanen.
